Osteoporosis – the facts
In Australia, half of all women and a third of all men over 60 years will suffer an osteoporotic fracture*. For Caucasian women of all ages, the risk of hip fracture is greater than the risk of breast cancer. The death rate associated with osteoporotic hip fracture is great than that associated with breast cancer, with 20-30 percent of all patients dying within 12 months.
The statistics are just as alarming for men, with the risk of men developing an osteoporotic fracture greater than the risk of developing prostate cancer.
Almost 80 percent of people with osteoporotic fractures are not treated to prevent further bone loss and future fractures.
The Bone Health Program – what we do
The Bone Health Program aims to ensure members are doing all they can to prevent an osteoporotic fracture. The Program helps reduce the risk of an osteoporotic fracture by providing education and support in the following areas:
-
Recommended bone health tests
-
Anti-osteoporosis medications
-
Optimal nutrition for strong bones – calcium, protein
-
Obtaining adequate vitamin D
-
Reducing risky behaviours - smoking, excessive alcohol intake
-
Exercise to strengthen bones and to prevent falls
-
Members with or at risk of osteoporosis are identified using claims data and invited into the program. Members can also call-in and request to participate
